SEP-IR at Wings over Holland

The Single Engine Piston – Instrument Rating (SEP-IR) course at Wings over Holland is designed for pilots who want to master instrument flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). A SEP-IR allows pilots to fly single-engine aircraft without relying on visual references, which is essential for safe flying in bad weather or controlled airspace. To participate, a pilot must have a valid Single Engine Piston (SEP) rating, 50 hours of overland flights as PIC and a valid medical examination.

The course combines practical and simulator training. Pilots must complete a minimum of 50 hours of practical experience, consisting of 20 hours of instrument flying on a DA40NG and 30 hours of training on an FNPT II simulator. The simulator training helps develop IFR skills in a controlled environment before they are applied in practice. Theory classes are provided externally by Orbit Groundschool, where pilots prepare for the theory exams required to obtain their Single Engine Instrument Rating.

Completion of SEP-IR training is followed by a practical exam, including an approximately 1.5-hour exam flight under instrument conditions. This rating allows pilots to fly safely and efficiently under IFR, significantly increasing their flexibility and professional opportunities. A Night Rating (NR) is required for pilots wishing to conduct IFR flights after sunset. A Single Engine Instrument Rating allows pilots to operate under all weather conditions and take their skills to a professional level.
