Become Instrument Rating Instructor
The Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI) course at Wings over Holland is designed for experienced pilots who want to instruct instrument flying. To participate, there are two entry options: pilots with a Flight Instructor (FI) rating must have at least 200 hours of instrument flight experience (IR) and 500 flight hours on airplanes, including at least 30 hours as a pilot-in-command (PIC). Pilots without an FI rating need at least 800 hours of IR, including 400 hours on airplanes. In both cases, a valid medical examination and an active SEP rating are required.
IRI training combines practice and theory. Pilots with an FI license take a minimum of 5 hours of practical training on a DA40 and 10 hours of theory class, which is integrated with the practical training. For pilots without an FI license, a more intensive course applies with a minimum of 10 hours of hands-on training and 35 hours of theory instruction. The training focuses on instructing pilots in instrument flying, including low visibility procedures, instrument navigation and emergency procedures.
Completion of Instrument Rating Instructor training is followed by an exam, consisting of an approximately 1-hour practical flight under the supervision of an examiner. This training is essential for pilots who want to expand their expertise and train others in professional instrument flying. With an IRI rating, instructors can train pilots to obtain and maintain their Instrument Rating (IR), making them qualified to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).

What is an IRI allowed to do?
An Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI) is authorized to provide instruction to pilots who wish to learn to fly under instrument flight procedures (IFR – Instrument Flight Rules). This means that an IRI can train pilots to obtain, maintain or renew an Instrument Rating (IR), which allows them to fly under instrument conditions, without external visual references.
- Providing Training for the Instrument Rating (IR)
- Teaching instrument flight procedures
- Improve IFR skills
- Preparation for IR proficiency checks
With an IRI rating, an instructor plays a crucial role in the training of pilots who want to fly under IFR conditions, such as for commercial flights or operations in low visibility. The training allows pilots to safely and efficiently master instrument flight procedures, essential for professional flying.
